Your Software Development Team Should Be Honest

Even When You Disagree

Honestly is the best policy, and it's something you should encourage from your software development team.

Whether you're running a business that hires or contracts developers, designers, engineers, and architects, diverse opinions, even when they don't align with yours, will enrich your success.

If you're a business owner, or you're managing projects for your organization, your perspective for completing the task is going to be different from your software development team.

You will have specific business goals in mind, which are absolutely necessary for the success of the business. However, you might be asking your developers to reach outside of their comfort zone to accomplish those goals. Other times, they might have insight that could save your business, even if it disrupts the business goals at hand.

Diverse Opinions are Good

Encourage your developers to be honest about their opinions, and then filter that information objectively. The filtering process is going to help you align your vision with theirs. PxO Ink LLC values honest and open communication with our clients. Our decades of experience has shown that providing feedback, and sometimes a little push-back, can make all the difference when it comes to avoiding future failure.

Everyone has a Unique Perspective

Developers know code. Software teams are steeped in it all day long. They also constantly use products and services, like the websites and apps that you're trying to build, daily! In addition to your quality assurance teams, have your developers actively use the product that you're building too. When your developers are using the product they're building, they'll be more apt to find problems, but they will also be able to provide unique insight and perspective on both the development and client experience.

Adjusting your business goals early to take these perspectives into account could save you thousands of dollars in the future.

Alignment of Business Objectives

If you're investing in your software development team well, and taking an active role in their growth, then you've provided the loyalty incentive necessary to align your business objectives. Software development teams, full-time, part-time, and freelance or contractor based, will have aligned business goals with their employer or client if they feel invested in the success of the business. As an owner or manager, it's your responsibility to ensure that happens.

Similarly, if you're part of a software development team or a freelance agent, always be mindful of your employer or client's business needs. If those needs aren't met, then they can't succeed, and that means you can't either.

Constructive Feedback

Remember to always encourage constructive feedback in a mutually beneficial open channel of communication. Sometimes it can sting, especially if you've invested your time, money, and energy into something that isn't turning out quite right. It's part of the nature of being invested in an idea. Ultimately though, if you filter and take constructive feedback as a valuable asset, your goals will be better aligned and success will be easier to attain.

Find Your Rock Star Team

It can be difficult to find a rock star team that you can be honest with, and who can be honest with you. If you feel like this post aligns with you, and you're looking to start a new software development project, or you want help improving or maintaining an existing application, reach out and contact PxO Ink LLC today.
